SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECRETARIAL ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN DELTA STATE

This research sought to determine the socio-economic factors militating against the retrogressive academic performance of secretarial administration students in tertiary institutions in Delta State. This study examined the relationship between these socioeconomic
factors and the academic performance of the student. The study adopted the crosssectional survey in its investigation of the variables. Primary source of data was generated through structured questionnaires. The population of the study was 100 students selected
randomly from institutions offering the programme in Delta State. A sample of fifty (50) respondents was calculated using the Chi-square formula for sample size determination. The data generate were analyzed with the aid of statistical instrument such as frequency table and simple percentages. It was found that there is a significant relationship between these socioeconomic
variables and the academic performance of students in secretarial administration and that students’ attitudes do contribute to their poor performance in their academic performance. The researcher in view of the findings made recommendations that government
should aid students with scholarship schemes to enable them overcome the socio-economic factors that may militate against their academic performance and also there should be adequate supply of learning materials and human resources in the system.
